CHAPTER XI

BLAKE: A CHASE THROUGH THE WORLD

We brought Mia’s crashed HydroStar back to the garage of The Tower. People kept telling me that these kinds of hydrogen cell malfunctions were common due to mechanical error, and that the parachute didn’t open because it was inadequately stored. But while I could believe this from an inexperienced civilian, it just didn’t make sense coming from an aerospace engineer and a Space Force member.

Unfortunately, the flycar was so destroyed that not even the most experienced engineer could check the flycar and confirm that the damage had been intentional. I spent so much time in the garage that I didn’t realize it was already two in the morning. I wanted to get some sleep then help Mia out of the hospital, but then Taylor entered the garage with a preoccupied face and said, “They’re gone. Mia, Eliza, Robert and Gabriela. I went to the hospital room just to check how Mia was doing, and she wasn’t there. I checked their apartments and nothing. There’s just some kind of microchips I’ve never seen before on the hospital table, covered with blood.”

Before I jumped to any conclusions, I went with him quickly to the hospital room to see with my own eyes these chips he was referring to. When I got to the room, I saw the minuscule chips laying on the table with red drops of blood. There were four of them, one for each person, but I didn’t know what they were.

“They may have left for space again with their ship,” Taylor said. Then so many questions came to my head that they overwhelmed me. Why did they leave? Why wouldn’t Mia tell me anything about leaving? Did she confirm one of her conspiracy theories? I only knew one thing for sure, and that’s where they went.

“They didn’t go to space,” said without showing any expression. “They left for a bunker in South America.” But Taylor knew I was upset. All I did was to try to make everyone welcome, especially Mia. And she repaid it by not trusting me, and giving me no opportunity to explain.

“Those are nano trackers,” Melissa said from the back of the room. She had a holotablet in her hands as if she wanted to show us something. She came close to us and continued, “All astronauts have them. If they took them out, they must’ve felt that someone had figured out how use them to track their steps. And I may know who’s doing it and why.”

Right then I remembered when Katharina followed Mia to the roof. Why would she know she was on the roof that day if she wasn’t tracking her? The Tower is huge; if you’re not intentionally following someone, it’s very easy to lose people here.

“I don’t like what I see, and you are not going to like it either, Blake,” she said while hitting a button on her holotable and showing us what must’ve been an old recording of Uncle Harry and Marcus.
